Prayer for the President

23 01 2009

Passage:  I Timothy 2:1-8

Points

1.  Requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving should be made for  kings and all those in authority.

2.  The result of our prayers will lead to peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

3.  God wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the good news of Jesus Christ.

Personalize:

Barack Obama is now the 44th President of the United States.  As the first African American President, it is a historic event.  As evangelical believers, there are concerns regarding the social issues we face and President Obama’s views, but one thing is true, we need to pray for him.  In I Timothy we are encouraged to express our “requests, prayers, and intercessions for all kings and those in authority.”  May we fulfill this request for our current President as well.

We are called to pray so we “may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”  When there is peace, then the gospel is able to reach more individuals.  We have the social freedom to share with others.  The good news of Jesus Christ has traveled in good times and bad; but when there is peace we can freely move and express our faith.  Let us pray for our President and other government officials so we may be led by godly and holy decisions.

Prayer:

Lord, we pray for wise counsel and godly influence in the life of President Obama, his family and other government officials.  May they not be swayed by the winds of culture and may they stand firm in their position as given to them by You.  When the stress of the job bears down on them, may they find a quiet and peaceful place to hear Your voice and leadership.  When decisions are being made, may they be directed by godly counsel and not by those who can scream the loudest.   May righteousness and integrity be characteristic of their lives and leadership.
