Passage: Matthew 9:35-38
Points
1. Jesus went to all the towns and villages, preaching, teaching, and healing.
2. Jesus had compassion for the crowds because they were like “sheep without a shepherd”.
3. “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.”
Personalize
Jesus was actively involved in the lives of people. As he looked around he did not have pity for others, but compassion. Compassion is defined as: a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering. As Jesus traveled from town to town he was engaged with the suffering of others because he saw their condition and chose to do all he could to releave their suffering. His compassion led to action.
Do we have the eyes of Christ? Do we see others in the same way Jesus saw? We will see the misfortune of others and have pity for them, but take no action. Compassion always leads to a desire to alleviate the suffering of others. What is our response to those struggling? Do we say we are sorry and wish them well; or do we step up and get involved in the situation they are facing? Look around, who does God reveal to you that needs a word of encouragement; a cooked meal to ease their schedule; a free night to spend with their spouse; or a friend who will share the good news of Jesus Christ? As God reveals, let us take action and make a difference in the life of someone else.
Prayer
Lord, we pray You will reveal to us the individuals around us who need a compassionate response. We are aware of our limitations and our lack of compassion for the needs of others. Through Your Holy Spirit, stir our heart for those around us. May we have compassion and take action to relieve them of the issues and difficulties they are facing. Only in Your strength will they be truly changed and affected. We pray for more workers in the fields.
