Return to Simplicity

5 02 2009

Passage: Matthew 10:1-10

Points:

1.  Jesus gave His disciples authority over evil spirits and the power to heal every kind of disease.

2.  The 12 disciples were instructed to go to the “lost sheep of Israel” and preach the kingdom is near.

3.  They were to travel light and trust they would receive what they need.

Personalize

Jesus gave simple instructions:  travel light, preach the kingdom, and heal the sick and diseased.  As they traveled, the Lord would provide what they needed for their daily food, shelter, and clothing needs.  The twelve would travel in pairs and would take little with them for their journey.

Simple is not in the vocabulary of today’s church and ministries.  We have buildings, budgets, programs, and activities.  When we look at the church of today we see the complex not the simple.  How can we return to the simplicity of the New Testament?  Is it possible to travel light and preach the simple gospel.  With all our programs and activities we become distracted by the means of ministry and we forget the end of our ministry, to preach the kingdom of heaven.

Prayer:

Lord help us to return to the simplicity of ministry.  We have become loaded down by the complexity of church life and the simplicity of ministry is uncommon.  May we return to simplicity and fulfill the mission you have set before us.
