Passage: Matthew 10:11-16
Points
1. The disciples were to find a man worthy or of “peace” and stay with him.
2. If they were not welcomed, they were to shake the dust off their feet and move on.
3. The journey would be challenging. They would be sheep among wolves and they were to be as shrewd as snakes and gentle as doves.
Personalize
The disciples were instructed to move from house to house and search for the one who would be “worthy”. In other translations they were to look for a “man of peace”. This individual would welcome the disciples into their home, family, and lives. As the disciples entered into their house they would have an opportunity to see a whole family changed by the kingdom message. If they were not received, they were instructed to dust off their feet and move to the next home or village.
We often become discouraged by the rejections we may receive from others. We are called to be faithful in delivering the message, but we are not responsible for the response to the message. Some individuals will be receptive to the gospel message, but others will reject what Christ has to offer. We must shake off the dust and move on. Others are waiting to hear the good news of Jesus Christ.
Prayer
Lord, may we not become discouraged by the rejection of others. Our only audience is you and we ask for strength and perseverance to press on as we make you known to others. May our search lead us to individuals you are preparing to hear the gospel. We are looking for the transformation only you can bring in the lives of others.
