Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. Romans 5:3-5 ESV
Chapter 5 begins with pointing out that we have peace with God through Jesus Christ. This peace makes it possible for suffering to be transformed to hope. In verses 3-5 we read that “…suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope…” The transformation from suffering to hope takes place because we are made at peace with God and the love of God dwells within us through the Holy Spirit.
If we are at peace with God through Jesus Christ and the love of God resides in our hearts through the Holy Spirit’s presence then we discover a hope even in the midst of our suffering. When the Holy Spirit resides within us then we discover the transformation from suffering to perseverence to character to hope. Under the direction of the Holy Spirit may we live with anticipation in times of suffering for we know he will produce in us character that will strengthen us for whatever we face.
Lord, in our suffering give us the strength to persevere as we await our transformation into people of character and hope.
