Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2
We are called not to be conformed but to be transformed in our thoughts. The goal is to test the value of what we are exposed to so that we may discern God’s good, acceptable and perfect will.
We are called not to be formed into the likeness of the culture in which we live but to be transformed into the likeness of Christ. It is easy to be blinded by the influence our culture has on us. My wife and I lived in Japan for six years. You quickly learn that you are “not in Kansas” any more. The cultural norms we were used to quickly became the abnormal ways of life. We discovered how much of our lives were affected by the culture in which we live.
Sometimes when encountering a different culture for the first time individuals experience what is called a “culture shock”. They are overwhelmed by the absent of normal and are being overwhelmed with a new reality. In the cultures we live, we should be aware that this is not the world or kingdom we are called to live. Christ has told us to conform to His kingdom and His way of life. When transformed by the Word of God our commitment to Christ will guide us in whatever city or nation we find ourselves.
Lord, may we transformed by the renewing of our mind so that we will know your will in all circumstances.
