Wisdom Gained

Scripture

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.  6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.  7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;  8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. – James 1:5-8 ESV

Observation

James encourages those who lack wisdom to ask for it. The promise is that God will give wisdom to those who ask in faith and without doubting.  The one who doubts is is “driven and tossed by the wind” because he is double minded and unstable in all his ways.

Application

In the Old Testament we learn that all wisdom comes from the Lord. “For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity,”  – Proverbs 2:6-7.  God’s wisdom provides knowledge and understanding to the upright and to those who walk in integrity.

We will not gain wisdom if we have “two minds” or are double minded. One who is single minded is one who lives with integrity and uprightness. Wisdom comes to those who live with God honoring clarity. This clarity will guide men and women of integrity into the ways that glorify God.  Without clarity we will be driven by the wind rather than directed by God’s wisdom.

Prayer

Lord may we be individuals of clarity and integrity. May we have a single focus on your purposes so that we may gain the wisdom to walk forward in the path directed by you.
