Pure Religion

26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.  27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. – James 1:26-27

The tongue reveals the true character of a person. If our speech is not characterized by Christ-like words then our religion is worthless. Pure religion is to care for the afflicted and to abstain from ungodly influences.

We may proclaim a religion that sounds good but if our speech and lives do not match, there is a disconnect. A disconnect shows a lack of integrity within our lives. Christ is looking for a people who are genuine and committed to glorifying Him in every part of our lives. We are called to “walk the walk” not just “talk the talk”.

Lord, may our Christianity be pure and purposeful. Use us to ease the suffering of the afflicted and to encourage the discouraged. May your grace and goodness abound in your children.
