17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. – James 3:17-18 ESV
James now speaks of a godly wisdom. It is peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy, good fruits, impartial, and sincere.
There is a great contrast between worldly wisdom and godly wisdom. Worldly wisdom is driven by jealousy and selfish ambition. Godly wisdom is characterized by gentleness, impartiality, and open to reasoning. In today’s culture selfish ambition seems to drive the political and social landscape. When one expresses peaceable and sincere desire they are seen as weak.
As followers of Christ we are not driven by jealousy and selfish ambition but we are led by the Holy Spirit which is made evident by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, and self control. In a world where gentleness and reason is over run by harshness and selfish desires, may we as followers of Christ be examples of godly wisdom in all our personal dealings with others.
Lord empower us through your Spirit that we may live among others with wisdom from above.
