Unknown Future

13 Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit” 14 yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.  15 Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” – James 4:13-15 ESV

Life is short and we should look to the Lord regarding the future of our life and work.

This passage counters the idea that our “destiny” is in our hands. We can plan tomorrow but we cannot know what the future will hold. James brings us back to reality by reminding us that our life is short and is like a mist that appears one minute but is gone the next. The only assurance we can find in the future is the future designed and developed by the Lord.

Lord we lean into you. We pray that you will give us an understanding of the future you have laid out before us.
