1 Come now, you rich, weep and howl for the miseries that are coming upon you. 2 Your riches have rotted and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver have corroded, and their corrosion will be evidence against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure in the last days. – James 5:1-3
James reveals that treasures obtained in this world will rust and corrode. Their corrosion will reveal the futility of their value.
In the last days we should focus our attention on the proclamation of the Kingdom of God. Instead we often spend our time obtaining riches and other achievements this world offers. James points out that treasures laid up on the earth will rust and corrode. They will not bring pleasure but discomfort because they “eat your flesh like a fire”.
Jesus instructed his followers with a different pursuit.
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. – Matthew 6:19-21
The treasures we lay up in heaven will bring joy and eternal benefits. The treasures we lay up on earth will be temporary and will bring sorrow rather than joy. May we, in these last days, seek to lay up treasures in heaven.
Lord reveal to us the treasures of value. May our efforts bring you glory and make you known in these last days.
