19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. – James 5:19-20
We have a responsibility to those individuals who wander from the faith. The rescue of a wanderer will save his soul.
The people of God have the tendency to wander, to roam away from God. As the hymn writer wrote:
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for Thy courts above
When we see others in the church wandering from the presence of God’s people it is also a sign they are walking outside the fellowship of God.
We all have the tendency to wander but God calls us back to fellowship with Him. Like a boy on the Lego isle at a toy store we are easily distracted. We look for things that will give us immediate gratification rather than staying in God’s transformation process. Once we look away, the look draws us. May we venture back to God and help others to make their return as well.
Lord, bring us back to you. May we assist our fellow wanderers to return as well.
