Prayerful Waiting

Scripture

“He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”  ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭40:29-31‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Observation

Often we are faint, weary, and exhausted; it is at those times that we wait upon the Lord and our strength will be renewed. We will mount up with wings like eagles; run and not grow weary; and walk and joy faint.

Application

In our times of exhaustion we are called to wait. This is the point where we often falter in prayer, waiting on the Lord. When we seek the Lord in prayer we  desire an immediate solution to our problems. To wait means we have to postpone the solutions to our dilemma and we are able to draw closer to the Lord and allow our will to be adjusted by his.  In the space between our prayer and God’s solution we come to a greater understanding of how God is using our current situation to accomplish His purposes. Our waiting becomes a time of discernment.

I once heard someone describe waiting as that of a waiter. The waiter is actively returning back to the table to see how he can better serve the customer. In the same way we are actively waiting on the Lord. Going back to him to discern His will in our situation; and seeking to know how we may best make adjustments in our life so that we may conform to His image and desires for our lives. So as we pray, let us learn to wait for we are promised that at the end of our waiting we will soar.

Prayer

Lord, teach me to wait on you, to yield to your leading so that I may experience your full restoration and rest.

Prayer Worship

Scripture

“Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!”  ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭141:2‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Observation

Our prayer and worship is an offering of praise to the Lord.

Application

We often come to prayer with our own agenda in mind. We want to receive something from our Heavenly Father.  Prayer is an opportunity to lift our praise and worship to the Lord. In prayer we recognize the eternal work behind our temporary circumstances. May our prayers be an act of worship and and expression of praise to our Lord who is working behind the scenes of our lives.

Prayer

Lord today may my prayer be a wonderful fragrance of praise and worship to You.

Anxiety to Prayer

Scripture

“do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”  ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Observation

Replace anxiety with prayer, bringing your request to the Lord with thanksgiving.

Application

Each day brings with it challenges and concerns. We have a choice to make; either we will respond with anxiety or prayer. Concerns for our children, frustrations we face at work, or changing life seasons will all stir a sense of anxiety.  May we turn these challenges into a prayer yielded to our sovereign Lord and full of thanksgiving for His care for us.

Prayer

Lord in my everyday life may I turn the cares of this life into a prayer for your guidance. Instead of responding with worry and anxiety may I respond with a grateful heart for your tender mercy and peace.

Perseverance in Prayer

Scripture

“praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,”. ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6:18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Observation

Active prayer takes place at all times in the Spirit and with all prayer and supplication. In prayer may we keep alert and persevere praying for one another.

Application

Perseverance is a necessary element of prayer. We are to come back to our prayer closet seeking the purposes of God for our lives and one another. Each time we return in prayer we gain a greater understanding and clarity regarding God’s direction. Like a waiter who returns   to the table to see if more is needed, so too we go back to our Heavenly Father with perseverance asking if more is needed and requested. In our waiting for clarity we go back to the Lord to seek His vision for our life and circumstances.

Prayer

Lord, may I not grow weary in prayer but may I persevere in seeking you for your direction in my life and that of others.

Gracious God

Scripture

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?  32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?  Romans 8:31-32

Observation

If God did not spare His Son on our behalf then we should also expect He will graciously give us all things.

Application

We often live life as orphans not children of God. We think to ourselves, “why should God give to me good things after all I have done?”.  We are reminded in Romans that God did not  spare His own Son on our behalf. If that is the case then we can expect so much more because Christ has adopted us into God’s family. Our Heavenly Father will not hold back good things but will graciously give us all things.

Prayer

Lord may we live as children of a gracious Heaven Father who willingly gives us all things.

The Spirit Intercedes

Scripture

26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.  27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.  Romans 8:26-27

Observation

The Spirit of God empowers our prayers and our Christian walk. Even in times when we do not know how to pray or to proceed the Spirit takes our petitions to our Heavenly Father, and he intercedes according to the will of God.

Application

Getting clarity in our current situation is not always easy. We may have certain ideas about how we should proceed yet we end up confused and lack confidence in moving forward or in responding.  It is in those times that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us in order to direct is toward the will of God. The Spirit searches our hearts and knows our intentions He then stands in the gap to direct us toward what is God’s will in the situations we face.

Prayer

Lord may we be sensitive to Your Spirit’s leading. In times when we do not know how to proceed may your Spirit take over and lead us in the path we are to follow.

Yielding Prayer

Scripture
Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” (‭Matthew‬ ‭26‬:‭42‬ ESV)

Observation
The reality of what Christ is about to face is at the forefront of his thoughts. He knew he would be facing the cruelty of man as experienced on the cross. His earthly ministry is soon about to make a transition and his time with his disciples is about to come to a close. The weight and burden of his future is bearing down on him. At that moment he prays a yielding prayer, “your will be done”.

Application
We always wrestle with the yielding prayer, “your will be done”. It is not in our human nature to give up control easily. We maintain control of our life and decisions as long as we can until finally we realize God’s will is the right choice. It is at that moment of salvation, at the turning points in life that we give up and yield to God’s perfect will for our lives.

Prayer
Lord I yield my life to you. May “your will be done”.
